Stripe Alternatives for South African Founders in 2026
May 22, 2026 · 6 min read
Stripe is the world's most developer-friendly payment processor — but as of 2026, South African-registered businesses cannot use Stripe Checkout or create Stripe Connect accounts for receiving payouts in ZAR. You can use the Stripe API for building, testing, and processing payments for customers globally, but settlement is restricted to US and EU legal entities.
For SA founders selling to customers globally or locally, here are the realistic alternatives.
Lemon Squeezy — best for digital products and SaaS
Lemon Squeezy acts as the Merchant of Record, meaning they handle all tax collection (VAT, GST) in every country on your behalf. You don't need a US entity, a tax attorney, or a European VAT registration. They accept businesses registered in South Africa and pay out globally via bank transfer or PayPal.
Pricing: 5% + $0.50 per transaction. No monthly fee. This is higher than Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30, but the tax handling alone justifies it for most international sellers — especially digital product creators who would otherwise need to register for VAT in the EU and US.
Best for: SaaS subscriptions, digital downloads, software licences.
Paddle — best for SaaS with global enterprise customers
Paddle is also a Merchant of Record and accepts ZA-registered businesses. Their feature set is more enterprise-focused than Lemon Squeezy — better support for complex subscription billing, trials, and B2B invoicing. They integrate well with Profitwell/Baremetrics for subscription analytics.
Pricing: 5% + $0.50 per transaction. Same as Lemon Squeezy. Best for: subscription SaaS targeting enterprise customers, especially in the EU where VAT compliance is complex.
PayFast — best for ZA customers paying in ZAR
PayFast is the dominant local payment gateway in South Africa. It supports all major SA payment methods: credit/debit cards, Instant EFT, SnapScan, Zapper, and Mobicred. Settlement is in ZAR, directly to a South African bank account.
Pricing: 2% per transaction (capped at R25), plus monthly fees depending on your plan. Best for: businesses with primarily South African customers who want to pay in ZAR, or businesses selling physical goods locally.
Peach Payments — best for growing SA e-commerce
Peach Payments is a South African payment gateway backed by major SA financial institutions. It supports card payments, Ozow (Instant EFT), and Apple Pay. Better suited to higher-volume e-commerce than PayFast, with more robust fraud detection and recurring billing support.
Pricing: custom based on volume. Best for: SA e-commerce businesses processing R500,000+ per month who need enterprise-grade payment infrastructure.
The practical recommendation
If you're building a digital product or SaaS and want to sell globally: use Lemon Squeezy. The Merchant of Record model eliminates international tax complexity entirely. If you're selling primarily to South African customers: use PayFast. If you're building a physical e-commerce business at scale in SA: consider Peach Payments.
